How do I know if my pet is overweight?

Your pet’s weight is something that is checked at every visit to ensure that your pet is at a healthy weight. If your pet is overweight, then we can help to work to figure out why and help to get it corrected. Oftentimes pets being overweight are overlooked by owners and even glorified as being extra cute, but this can be detrimental to their help and may even shorten their lifespan.

In addition to coming into the vet to discuss your pet’s weight and assess their body condition, there are a few things you can do at home to help determine if your pet is overweight. There is no ‘one-size fits all’ method to check your peds condition, but there are a few things to look for. For almost all dogs and cats, when looking from above you should be able to see the end of the ribcage where it drops off to a waist. Dogs and cats should all have a waist that is narrower than their chest. For some breeds it is even normal, when at a good weight, to be able to see the last few ribs. When looking from the side profile, dogs should have something called a ‘tuck’ where the belly tucks up at the end of the sternum/ribcage. Cats can also have a tuck, but it can easily be hidden by their primordial pouch, a normal hanging structure from their belly area.

Although there are a few medical conditions that may contribute to excessive weight gain, oftentimes our pets are simply getting overfed, and under exercised. Being overweight carries many of the same risks it does for people, including accelerating and exacerbating osteoarthritis, increased chance of developing diabetes mellitus, worsening cardiovascular and pulmonary health, higher blood pressure, and even higher incidence of certain cancers. Since we are in control of our pet’s nutrition, we should try our best to put their health first! If you are concerned about your pet’s weight, talk to your vet about it at your next visit!

I brought in my dog on a Friday evening, and they took her in right away for testing. The staff were friendly; the office offers refreshments for the people waiting, and the facility is clean and organized. We left with a satisfactory outcome and plenty of relief. No one ever wants to bring their pet to the ER, but in our experience, it's assuring that we know where we can take our animals if ever needed.

After my problems at GQC Emergency Vet one of the administrators there noticed my one star review and called me to ask exactly what happened. This caught me by surprise as I was amazed that they kept an eye on their reviews. After I talked to him for a while, he asked if he could call back after he reviewed what happened with their staff.

He called me back, apologized for my problems and assurred me that it was taken care of and that my next appointment would be much better.

We went in this morning and the ladies at the front desk checked to see if we had an appointment and it was on schedule. They assurred us that it was and we went in a bit earlier than 7:30.

We conferred with one of the people there and she took our dog out to be weighed and examined by the Doctor who performed the surgery.

When they came back, the Doctor was with my Dog and another lady who worked there and he told me exactly how she was doing, how she was healing, and told me that in his professional opinion taking an X-Ray would be a waste of money as she was doing well...he saved us a few hundred dollars with that piece of advice, and we're greateful. He gave our Dog a great prognosis and advised us not to let her do any running or other strenuous activity for another 4 weeks to ensure the healing was completed. As our dog frequents a Doggie Day Care facility, that was great advice. She'll have to wait to go back for another month.

It was a complete reversal of the previous visit and the wife and I couldn't be happier with the Veterinary hospital and their staff and special kudos to Doctor Conzemius, who did the surgery and the consultation, also to the administrator who helped us out.

Thanks for a great day.
