How Nutrition Can Help Preserve Joint Health in Aging Pets

As pets grow older, joint aches, stiffness, and lower mobility often become part of their everyday lives. Along with veterinary treatment and therapy, nutrition plays a huge role in helping senior pets stay comfortable, active, and happy. At Queen Creek Emergency Veterinarian & Specialty Center, we offer full-service care—including dietary guidance, supplements, diagnostics, and surgery—to support joint health from all angles.

1. Fueling Joints with a High-Quality, Balanced Diet

Nutrition is the foundation of joint wellness.

  • Cats: Diets rich in lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and maintain mobility.

  • Dogs: Balanced meals help promote flexion, strength, and resilience in joints.

If you’re unsure which food to feed your senior pet, bring it up during one of our wellness visits. As part of our General Practice & Preventive Care services, we can help you determine the best diet plan.

2. Helpful Supplements for Joint Comfort

Certain supplements can make a real difference in easing joint discomfort and improving movement:

  • Glucosamine & Chondroitin (for example, Cosequin): support cartilage protection and repair.

  • Cetyl Myristoleate (Cetyl-M): may help in early arthritis or ligament strain to reduce pain and improve motion.

  • Adequan Injections: injectable options that sometimes offer faster relief for severe or advanced joint conditions.

  • Natural anti-inflammatories (like Duralactin / MicroLactin): gentler on digestion and helpful for pets with sensitivities.

At GQ Vet Clinic, we only recommend veterinary-grade supplements that are safe, effective, and suitable for your pet’s medical history.

3. A Whole-Pet Approach to Joint Health

Nutrition and supplements work best when they’re part of a broader wellness plan. Here’s how we build that at GQ Vet:

  • Maintain healthy weight – extra pounds put more stress on joints.

  • Gentle exercise & activity – keeping movement regular helps preserve flexibility and strength.

  • Diagnostics & Monitoring – Regular checkups and diagnostic imaging through our Radiology services enable us to catch joint issues early.

  • Surgical & Specialty Care when needed – procedures like Total Hip Replacement, TPLO, or Fracture Surgery are available when conservative treatments aren’t enough.

4. Lifestyle & Supportive Therapies Beyond Food

Here are extra steps that can add real comfort to your pet’s life:

  • Rehabilitation / Therapy: Controlled physical therapy, passive range-of-motion exercises, and guided movement help maintain function.

  • Comfortable Environment: Soft beds, non-slippery surfaces, ramps for steps, accessible water bowls—these simple things reduce daily strain.

  • Pain Management Options: Our services include specialty care in Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics / Specialty Surgery, and more to address pain and inflammation.

  • Routine Exams: Frequent checkups mean early detection of joint issues—allowing intervention before discomfort becomes severe.

5. Practical Tips for Pet Parents

  • Always Talk with Your Vet First: Some supplements or diet changes may not be suitable depending on health conditions or medications.

  • Watch for Early Signs: Mild stiffness, hesitation jumping, slower play—these can be early indicators. Acting early helps manage progression.

  • Choose Trusted Brands: Use veterinarian-recommended supplements, high-quality diets, and follow dosage guidance.

  • Adjust the Home Setup: Cushioned bedding, ramps, easy access to food/water, and safe flooring can all lessen strain.

  • Reevaluate Regularly: Senior pet needs change over time. Keep in regular contact with us to adjust diet, therapies, or treatments as needed.

Having lost my husband recently, I was close to panic when my chihuahua began experiencing unsettling symptoms. The office could not have been kinder! Natalie, Hannah, and Dr. Schneider were so thoughtful and caring. A multitude of tests were run which were essentially normal with a known enlarged heart and murmur detected. I've had at least 2 FU calls from the clinic. We will return on the 25th for a previously scheduled echocardiogram. While Barry is not entirely his old self, I have been reassured by the absence of dire findings. I've also been encouraged to call if anything changes before the 25th. Thank you to the amazing staff at GQC!

Wonderful animal hospital! Very attentive and knowledgeable while caring for us as well as our pet. The best thing about them is that they didn't try to upcharge us on tests that she didn't need. I would highly recommend.
