How to tell if my pet is dehydrated

Dehydration occurs when animals lose more water and electrolytes than the body is currently taking in.  If this becomes severe it can become dangerous.  Here are a few ways to check if your pet is dehydrated at home that might prompt a veterinary visit.

  1. Check gums and elasticity of skin – gently lift your pets lip and pinch the skin over their neck region. If the gums feel sticky or the skin doesn’t immediately go back to normal then they are likely dehydrated.
  2. Other physical signs of dehydration include eyes sunken further into the head than usual, unwilling to walk, eat or drink, concentrated smelling urine or darker color than usual.

If you are ever unsure or your pet is displaying signs of dehydration please have them seen by a veterinarian right away.

This place is the place to go for compassion. We have been here before about a year prior for another cat we have who just had something minor happen of course the wait was long well over a couple hours but that's how it is with emergency clinics just like with human emergency clinics the more extreme and critical cases go first. This morning around 1am we noticed our cat wasn't having trouble breathing and we took him here, we were immediately rushed back and brought into the treatment area where all hands were on deck for my sweet cat and the doctor came and talked to us about what was going on. I work in a vet clinic myself and the level of compassion each and every single person working this morning was through the roof. At the end of the day we did have to help our baby cross the rainbow bridge but I am so much more at peace knowing the level of love and care that was given to him in his final moments with this clinic. DVM Greenwood was so attentive and kind and was so understanding of our situation and made us feel at ease and at peace with our choices. She was thorough and amazing. I feel so horrible I did not grab the tech who was working with us name but she was the light during this dark time for us. I cannot thank you all enough for your care for my sweet boy Baxter. Thank you thank you thank you !
