Maybe my dog needs a pedicure

Why does my pet keep licking his paws?

There are numerous reasons your pet may be licking their paws, including allergies, pain, or anxiety to name a few. If your pet is licking for more than one day, further investigation is warranted.

These are the top 5 most common reasons pets may lick their paws:

  1. Allergies
    1. Environmental allergies such as grass or pollen
    2. Food – most commonly due to a beef or chicken allergy
    3. Products such as a new laundry detergent
  2. Pain
    1. Injuries, arthritis, and overgrown nails, are potential causes of pain. Since your pet cannot verbalize their pain, they do the only thing they can do, which is lick the area that hurts.
  3. Infections
    1. This can include yeast infections, bacterial, viral or even fungal infections.
  4. Boredom/Anxiety
    1. Paw licking causes a dopamine and endorphin release that has a calming or soothing effect.
  5. Interdigital cysts
    1. These cysts often develop between the toes, but can also occur on the paw pads.

Treatment for each of these conditions is different. Please schedule a visit with your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment for your pet. If your pet is licking to the point that their paws are red, swollen, or missing hair – please utilize a deterrent such as a cone, until your pet can be evaluated by a veterinarian.

I’m so thankful for Dr. Howard and the rest of the staff for being able to revive my pup when her heart stopped under sedation! They all took such good care of her and were very respectful and accommodating to me during this scary situation. My pup is recovering well and I would absolutely trust them with my dogs with any emergencies!

About a month ago my parents dog had to be unexpectedly put down. From the moment we walked in the door every single employee we came in contact with was exceptional. The level of compassion they showed my parents and their dog was indescribable . They were so patient and kind with my parents as they said goodbye to their dog. A week or so later they received a condolence card from the staff, which they all individually signed with individual heartfelt messages. When their dogs ashes were ready they sent a text letting them know they could pick up the ashes and even went at far to say they didn't have to come inside the facility if they weren't able to. The text stated my parents could text when they arrive and someone would bring the ashes to the car. So kind! And lastly, the presentation of the ashes, paw print, clipping of hair were all beautifully done. Although the circumstances that led us to this facility were horribly sad, the entire staff from beginning to end made these sad circumstances somewhat bearable. We can't recommend them enough. The level of care and compassion is top notch. Thank you for everything.

My cat and I received top notch care at this facility. My primary care vet referred us here, and they were so calm, patient, understanding, and thorough from the second we walked in the door... My cat was fully assessed with labs drawn within minutes and pain meds were administered almost immediately. In only a few minutes, the lab results confirmed the diagnosis they (and I) suspected. Unfortunately, it was a very poor prognosis and we had to euthanize, which was a first for me. They were so loving and gentle throughout the process. Since it was my first time going through that, I don't have a point of comparison, but it was absolutely the nicest way I could imagine enduring such a tragic loss. I had all the time I needed to process it and hold him in a calm and welcoming room, complete with candy, tissues, and engaging decorations/special touches to look at and be distracted/humored by. The unexpected piece, which prompted this review, came a week later when I received a lovely sympathy card in the mail signed by everyone in the office who had anything to do with my cat's care. The notes they wrote were personalized and heartfelt. It was completely unexpected and certainly not necessary, but a thoughtful gesture that really shows they care and will go the extra mile for their humans as well as the animals they treat. Thank you for your kindness. Your staff is amazing in every way. I hope I never have to come back, but if I do, you're worth the drive. Erica (and Mitchell the orange cat)

5 star rating
My little dog, Daisy, was attacked by a coyote. We immediately rushed her in and they were prepped and ready for her when we arrived. They immediately started her IV to administer pain meds. We discussed with the vet that we had a budget and they respected that. After the X-ray & seeing the damage to her trachea and vessels, they didn't continue drawing all the blood they were planning to help us save money. We know that they did all they could for our baby girl within our budget. Despite our broken hearts, we were happy with the care she received. Her memory box is so beautiful. Thank you!!
