No one ever wants to visit the emergency vet, but on Jan. 2, we had no choice. Our 9-year-old dog, Harley, still wasn't himself. Since New Year's Day, he hadn't eaten, barked, begged, or done any of his usual habits, so we took him to the Gilbert Queen Creek Emergency Veterinarian & Specialty Center.
We arrived around 4:30 p.m. and were greeted with kindness and professionalism. The staff immediately assessed Harley in the spacious lobby, taking his weight and temperature. While waiting for a room, we appreciated the large, comfy chairs that even allowed my partner and me to sit together. They thoughtfully provided water, coffee, and snacks for pet owners--a small but comforting touch during a stressful time.
Once we were in the room, I was impressed by the setup. The space was clean, organized, and designed with pets in mind. Harley, who wasn't feeling his best, seemed to find some relief on the tiered tile steps, which made it easy for him to sit comfortably. There was even a TV we could have watched while waiting.
The staff, from reception to vet assistants to the veterinarian, were incredibly compassionate and thorough. They took the time to explain Harley's symptoms and the purpose of each test, never pressuring us into unnecessary procedures. While we waited for test results, the private room allowed us to feel more at ease in what was, admittedly, a very difficult situation.
Harley was started on medication, and we saw some improvement for a day and a half. Unfortunately, his condition declined rapidly, and when we returned for a follow-up appointment two days later, we faced the heartbreaking reality that euthanasia was the only option.
Though the assistants and veterinarian at the follow-up differed from the first visit, they were just as compassionate, honest, and gentle. They guided us through the process with such kindness. We were taken to a special room where we could say goodbye. Harley was wrapped in a cozy blanket, and we petted him and held his paws as he peacefully drifted off to doggy heaven. It was devastating, but the staff reassured us that we were making the right decision.
They even gave us a thoughtful sympathy gift and led us out through a private exit, sparing us the difficulty of walking through the main lobby while our emotions were raw.
While the situation was heartbreaking, I'm incredibly grateful to the GQ Emergency Veterinarian & Specialty Center for making an unbearable experience as peaceful as possible. Their care, empathy, and professionalism meant everything to us. I highly recommend them to anyone needing emergency care for their beloved pet.
